Stalking the Stacks with Library Lil * |
2001-04-24 One of the e-mails that I received as I announced my resignation was from Jessie. She says in the e-mail: if there was anything you did like about that job, you sure didn’t mention it in the journal. So now here as I feel nostalgic and start having second thoughts I am going to explain, for posterity what I did like about my tenure at Library X.I liked when I was a children’s librarian the storytimes that I did. I especially liked seeing the young faces all excited about a particular book and about being read to. I even liked singing “old Macdonald had a farm, and on that farm he had a dinosaur!” I liked teaching computer classes. There is just something so exciting about teaching someone to use the Internet and have them tell me later, that they connected with an old friend, because of skills I showed them. I liked planning computer classes. I liked that I could spend time learning features in MS word or excel. I loved talking about books with people (and I didn’t do it near enough here). I enjoyed helping people find a good book to take on vacation, or just introducing new authors to people. I enjoyed hearing about the books that people loved to read as well. I liked helping people find the information they needed. The woman who ran excitedly to the photocopier with the child support formula manual muttering, I’ll get that bastard yet, was just as exciting as the woman who needed a book on making things with dried gourds. I liked helping people to use the computers one on one (not just classes). When I would show someone the magazine database and point out it’s full-text part, I became a hero. I liked feeling that I made a difference in people’s lives, and I guess I’ll miss that the most.
