Just a short little political rant.. or maybe not political.
Anyway, I've been attending these "knitting" playgroups which are really Attachment parenting playgroups. Politics came up a few weeks ago and I was stunned to learn that this same woman who wouldn't use plastic containers to store her food was all really gung ho for our local congress person, who never met an environmental bill he liked or could vote for.

Today, I was reading the blog of one of the women in the group--one of the two people that talked me into attending. She had a comment from another lady in the group (the mom of Amy and Emily's best bud in the group of kids) I followed through and discovered she too has a blog. One entry really struck me (and no I'm not linking) in which she challenged anyone to "prove these statements wrong" and change her mind about who she's voting for. And then proceeded to list every twisted weird wacko thing said in conservative talk shows about Obama.

Now, I'm not going to say who you should vote for. And I'm not going to hate you if you tell me you are voting for one candidate or another. I still speak to many members of my family who feel totally different about the world than I do.
No, what totally offends me is the whole--Try to change my mind--try to prove me wrong! when in fact nothing will change this woman's mind. She's already decided what to believe, based on what is anyone's guess.
And I'm noticing she's not alone. Oh not in the belief thing, because I'll be the first to admit that I have a belief about what's right for this country (based on what I'd have a hard time telling you) and it would take a really really really big monumental discovery to change my mind--but I'm not going to go around and say--just try to change my mind (I dare you)! Well also I have a few stupid ideas too based on nothing, and I'm not going to spout them off to you--even if I do hear someone on the radio spouting them off too.
Yet, this is exactly what I see a lot of people doing with this election: I'm voting for candidate X because I believe Candidate Y is EVIL (because I saw it on the Internet), just try and prove me wrong because really I want to hear it. No they don't.
And I guess I'm just writing this to remind myself not to fall for it. No matter how stupid the belief is.
