I neglected to write up a race report for the 5k I ran April 18. The fact of it is that I did a personal worst time (31:56) and felt bad racing too. I think I was dehydrated and under trained. The next day I had a really sore hamstring too. The first 1.5 miles felt really good though, so perhaps there is hope for me. I also ended up in the background of a picture that was on the front page of a local paper The Sunday edition--thankfully not in yuppieville. It was a really unflattering picture of me. REALLY. Again fortunately I was in the background so unless you know it was me, you probably can't tell. Although I did have a friend on facebook say--nice picture so maybe not.
I was also a bit disappointed with the shirt for the race. Now, I've gotten shirts before that were ugly or didn't fir right. MIL even shortened the tech shirt I got as part of a big race a few years ago. But this... well. You see one of the big sponsors of this race is W@lmart. And I know lots of people shop there, lots of people work there yadda yadda, but you know what. I don't. I don't shop there if I can avoid it and I would have to be pretty desperate to work there. And I certainly didn't want to have a shirt advertising them. I wouldn't let them PAY me to wear their name, so what made anyone think that I'd be grateful to get a shirt with them on the back?
So I did what any self-respecting hippie mom would do, I took the leftover fabric paint we bought for some party craft or other and painted over the logo. It isn't perfect, but at least I'm not advertising. My husband laughed the entire time. Luckily I had blue the color of the shirt--otherwise I was going to red X it out.

Since the race, I've not run all that much. I did two miles last week and then went running with a friend who is just starting out, and pretty much walked 2 miles. Am hoping to go out and run tomorrow--and hopefully for a longer run.

Lest this become all bout some sucky race and my misplaced hippie ideals, let me leave you with a cute kid story:
So, last Wednesday after her bath but before her hair drying session, Amy discovered Emily had *gasp* taken a barbie shoe of hers and was *bigger gasp* playing with it. She ran up to her and did this grr thing where she knocks her fists onto either said of Emily's arm. After I separated them, I told Amy how she needed to think about "how you could have handled this without using your hands" and plopped her down to get her hair dried minus the usual entertainments. A few minutes later she said, "mom I know!" and so I said--ok how could you have handled it. She replies, "I could have *kicked* her!" Oh yes, the letter of the law but not the spirit.

Today Emily decided that she needed a pen pal (which really began when Amy wrote a letter to a friend of ours who is a vet--asking why do cats die?). So I told her she shoudl write husband's aunt E. Here is what she wrote:
Happy Panda Day! Ant E (she asked how to spell her name but not the aunt part) I made panda day up. Love Emily.
I love the crazy spelling by the way. I hate giving them the answer when they ask--How do you spell X.

I had a better Emily story but I have forgotten it, which should be a reminder to me to write these things down!
