I love summer. I especially love summer in Michigan. It never gets that hot--at least not by my central Illinois standards (as an aside, I grew up in central Illinois with only a window unit AC. It would regularly get into the mid 90s with high humidity and stay there. We swam at the public pool which was freezing most days just to cool off). In fact I find myself saying quite regularly that it is too cold to go swimming--the public pool is heated so it is bearable.
What I love most are the easy breezy days. No school no work (for me--there is little work in the summer) just days at home playing outside.
But in fact my love for summer is making me a little crazy right now. Let me explain.

See I love all the stuff to do. I love hanging out at the pool. I love farmer's markets, I love garage sales, I love playing outside, and I love summer reading program at the library. In fact there is so much "stuff" that I associate with summer--running outside, family walks, bike rides, etc. That I could easily completely fill every hour of every day of three summers and still not get it all done. But what makes summer so relaxing is the not having to rush from this activity to that one in the way that so many holiday seasons are.
So take today for example--we've finished 2 weeks of swimming lessons yesterday. The week was full of play dates and running here and there. But today there is nothing at all on the calendar. Nothing. The entire day is as open as the sky on the prairie. It seems like a no-brainer that today would be the day to relax and go with the flow. No plans just playing. And yet....
We haven't made it to the library yet this week and today is Friday which means garage sales and I have some errands I'd like to run. It is cool and perhaps might be a good day to ride bikes or run or go somewhere. Basically enough stuff to fill the day.

My trick, I think, is to let go. To remember that it isn't the bike rides and trips to the park or the garage sales that the ladies will remember fondly. Instead it will be the long days of just playing in the backyard, inventing clubs and hideouts, and making concoctions out of stuff they find. So today, we probably won't get the stuff dropped off to goodwill or the recycle center. We probably won't get the birthday gifts purchased or the package mailed. Garage sales will have to wait until next week (or after farmer's market tomorrow). There might be a bike ride later or there might not. But I'm almost sure there will be a bath and tired tired girls tonight.
